During a writing residency, students learn that poetry/prose is not
a force outside of them. Activities provide meaningful links between life
experiences in the outer world and inner feelings about them. The residency
also calls attention to what is frequently overlooked, turning ordinary
images into extraordinary details. Pictures, music, earth-related objects,
as well as writings by those well-known, may be used to activate creative
thought.
Following initiating activities, students launch into their own
writing, followed by meaningful sharing. The strengths of each piece
are acknowledged, as well as suggestions for revision.
Successive visits
serve
to awaken the inner voice of each participant. As writing is generated
and shared, learning unfolds in layers. The interactions encourage
risk-taking to write, and can greatly increase the desire to write. Writing
residencies
are tailored to meet the needs of varied school populations and grade
levels. |
